Sustainability in the Hydration Supplement Industry
Browse your local health food store or grocery aisle and you’ll see a wall of single-serving plastics:
- Virgin plastic ubes
- Virgin plastic bottles
- Virgin plastic powder packets inside a larger plastic bag
It’s plastics on plastics on plastics! But where does it all end up? Used plastics get carried downriver to shorelines and into the ocean’s currents, where it travels hundreds of thousands of miles in the South Pacific Gyre. On Henderson Island, an uninhabited atoll in the Pacific, researchers found plastic from Russia, Japan, China, South America, and the United States, and that’s just one of the thousands of cases.
Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste pours into the oceans. It breaks down into toxic microplastics that pollute municipal drinking water supplies around the world. That’s not the type of hydration we signed up for! At Buoy, we’re doing everything we can to turn hydration on its head. Here’s how:
100% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) Materials in Each Bottle
You could say we’re a little obsessed with our packaging. Have you ever wondered what happens to all the plastic water bottles and old milk jugs you toss in the recycling bin? Well, at least some of them get turned into Buoy bottles. We create zero new plastic waste by making our bottles with 100% PCR materials. Using recycled materials diverts waste and cuts down on pollution. The earth has been good to us—the least we can do is return the favor!
Less Material per Serving
We don’t just use better plastic, we use less of it. Buoy bottles contain a whopping 40 servings compared to competitors that often time only use single servings that are then repacked into another plastic bag. Yikes! We don’t pretend to be math geniuses, but if our calculations are correct we’re moving in the right direction.
Biodegradable Kraft Mailers, Anyone?
If all we did was green-ify our packaging, that wouldn’t be enough. The mailers we send to our loyal customers are entirely biodegradable and made of 100% recycled materials. We’re just that gung-ho about the environment! So sit back, relax and read your next mailer with a clear, clean conscience.
Carbon neutral is what we do baby!
The harsh reality is that we’ll always have a small carbon footprint no matter how hard we try, but that doesn’t mean we won’t do everything in our power to offset our carbon emissions. We’re always looking for new ways to do our part, like making consistent contributions to environmental efforts like the Jarí Para Forest Conservation Project in the Amazon. Healthier humans and a healthier planet aren’t going to happen on their own. We’re proud to lead the revolution in sustainable hydration.
Why It Matters: Plastic Waste and Water Quality
It’s easy to forget how connected plastic packaging is to water pollution. But when microplastics enter oceans, lakes, and rivers, they don’t just endanger wildlife - they make their way back to us through drinking water. Studies have found microplastics in 83% of tap water samples globally. For a product designed to keep you hydrated, using packaging that pollutes water doesn’t add up.
Choosing PCR materials and low-waste packaging isn’t just a branding decision. It’s about taking responsibility for the full lifecycle of a product and prioritising human health alongside planetary health.
Rethinking Convenience: The Hidden Cost of Single-Serves
We get it. Single-serve packets are convenient. But they’re also a major driver of packaging waste. Every individually wrapped stick, pouch, or tablet adds another layer of waste that often isn’t recycled. At Buoy, we chose to rethink this model.
Each bottle of Buoy Hydration contains 40 servings in one lightweight bottle. That’s 40 fewer packets heading to landfill. It's a win for your pantry and the planet.
Sustainability That Scales
We know that being eco-friendly can sometimes feel like an uphill battle, especially when convenience and cost often win out. That’s why we’ve built sustainability into the very core of our business model. Not just as a feel-good feature, but as a scalable solution.
From our sourcing partners to our shipping materials, we’re constantly evaluating how to reduce our footprint while still making hydration easy, effective, and accessible.
Small Choices, Big Impact
You don’t have to overhaul your entire lifestyle to make a difference. Switching to a more sustainable hydration solution is a small, actionable step anyone can take. And if thousands of people make that same decision? That’s how movements begin.
When you choose Buoy, you’re not just fuelling your body. You’re casting a vote for a healthier planet. That ripple effect adds up, and it matters.
